IAEA Safeguards Inspectors Visit to the Institute of Nuclear Science & Technology

Posted on

IAEA Safeguards inspectors,  Teshome Bayou Temesgen and Albert Bopape, together with Radiation Protection Officers from Radiation Protection Board,  Arthur O. Koten and Isaaac Mundia  visited the Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology on 11th September 2018 to carry out verification activities.

The IAEA inspector are in the country through the Safeguards Agreements and Non Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Safeguards inspectors are an essential part of the global non-proliferation regime, carrying out verification activities, so the IAEA can provide assurances to States worldwide that other countries are not diverting nuclear material from peaceful to military purposes or misusing nuclear technology. One important activity is the inspection of declared stocks of nuclear material: the IAEA is the only organization in the world with the mandate to verify the use of nuclear material and technology globally.

COLLABORATION BETWEEN UNIVERSITY OF NAIROBI AND STATE KEY LABORATORY OF ORGANIC GEOCHEMISTRY

Posted on

Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry (GIG)Prof. Gan Zhang, PhD, the Deputy Director at the State Key Laboratory of Organic Geochemistry (SKLOG),  Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry lead a Chinese delegation to start off the collaboration between the University of Nairobi and Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry (GIG),  through the Southern Contaminants Programme (SCP) on 7th August 2018.

He was accompanied by Prof. Jun Li, PhD; Dr Liu Xin and Dr Zhao Shiezhen. The collaboration is in the area of research in environmental sciences along the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road.  The goal of SCP is to assess chemical pollution in the environment of the low-latitude coastal regions of Asia and Africa, along with the development of a sustainable collaboration network along the 21st-century Maritime Silk Road (MSR).  The first phase of the program will last for 3 years (2017-2019) and is funded by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) as part of its Belt & Road Initiatives and managed GIG. The target pollutants of SCP are persistent toxic substances (PTS), e. g. persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and heavy metals (HMs); and various emerging contaminants (ECs), such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs).

The main research topics of SCP include

  1. PTS/ECs in the urban atmosphere;
  2. Biomonitoring of PTS/ECs in coastal waters;
  3. ECs in wastewater and river waters; and
  4. PTS/ECs exposure and risk linked to solid waste disposal sites and landfills.
  5. SCP provides its participants with training and academic exchange opportunities in China where they are hosted by the State Key Laboratory of Organic Geochemistry (SKLOG) in GIG for laboratory access and technical support.

Passive air monitoring filters have already been mounted across the country and several students from the Institute of Nuclear Science & Technology will be travelling to China for training and academic exchange where they will have laboratory access to carry out the analysis as part of their postgraduate research work.
Prof. Gan also gave a seminar on the China Education System, Role and Research at SKLOG on 8th August 2018.
